What are These?

We have these "berries" growing all over our woods.  I have never picked them because I have no clue what they are.  Yesterday I scoured all sort of berry sites and came up with zip that looked just like them.  The closest I could get was chokecherry or chokeberry.  Even still, they seem a bit off from what my eye can discern.

While I would love to have another type of wine to play with, I'd also love to live to tell about it.  Or at least not hallucinate and tell everyone how much I love them.  Although that could be fun!

So here are the photos:

Every seen them?

Know what they are?

I love you, I love you, I love you!  Who needs organic hallucinogens after all?

  3. It looks kinda like a chokecherry to me. Is is mostly seed with a tiny bit of pulp and skin? Otherwise??? The leaves don't look right for currents. Hope you figure out what it is.

  4. Not one clue. But it would bug me too, whether I could eat them or not. Take them into your extension office. You have a 20% chance someone there will be on the ball enough to figure it out ;)

  5. I'm pretty sure they're currants. Probably from once domesticated bushes planted but now gone wild and spread. We had huge bushes of them in Illinoisland.

Google "picture of red currants" and see what you think.

  7. I'm an Eagle Boy Scout. I can tie knots, track animals and identify wild plants, or at least that's what I should be able to do. Yet you all are totally out of my league. I have no idea what it is. Is it bitter on your tongue? If so, then it's probably not very useful for making wine.

  8. Erin, my thoughts exactly!

Judy, now I never even thought of that! Still would want to know if they are toxic tho, my dogs have a tendency to be "naughty".

Alla, truth be told, I didn't even touch them. But I will and see what comes out.

Jane, 20%? Well I think you are being overly positive! Our office is ZIP! I could go to another county mabye...like hours away.

MamaPea, yeah I had thought that at one point but after having looked at so many, I don't recall my thoughts on that one. So I will go back and look. Thanks!

Ruta, you may be right. Now I suppose I have to taste test. I'll write my will first just in case. :)

Jody, well heck! I thought all Eagle and Boy Scouts had to earn badges or something!? You went to bed hungry, didn't ya? ;)

Jan, Jan, Jan... You win with that one!! So proud! Why didn't I think of that!? Good one!

  9. Holy cow, I have no idea! I think I would be very, very leery of trying them. Maybe you could mail them, very carefully packaged, to the county extension that is hours away??? Keep us posted. I'm all curious now. Hey, what about an old timer that lives around you?? They are a goldmine when it comes to stuff like that.

  13. Lori, next time I see an old timer, that would be the most likely answer! Good call!

Sue, you are too darn sweet! I promise I wont make any wine with them :o)

MAFW, kill ya dead...always one of my favorite sayings! HA!

Laura-Lisa, lucky girl on the berries the birds didn't get! Hope you get them soon cuz those buggers are fast!!

All, my Uncle Wally told me NOT to eat them unless I wanted to end up in a tree, doped up and sleeping with another man with no recollection of it... he watches The Bold & The Beautiful on his lunch break. HAHAHAHA!!! Gotta love a man who isn't afraid to admit he watches the soaps!
