The Spelling Bee

My Maternal Grandmother never graduated from High School.  She married my Grampa when she was 16 and raised 8 kids on the farm.  That wasn't all that uncommon back in the day.  Don't get me wrong, she was most certainly not uneducated or a dunce.  She had more "cents" than most 16 year olds of today combined.
When she was a young girl, she won The Spelling Bee at her school.  It was a very proud accomplishment for her.  My Aunt Bena still has her achievement certificate, I believe.  Until recently, I had completely forgotten this tale.

So in honor of my Grama and her wonderful spelling abilities, we are having a Spelling Bee...right here!  Right now!

And here's your word:

Sharing.  S-H-A-R-I-N-G.  Sharing.

Sharing is defined as:  To allow someone to use or enjoy something that one possesses.

Well by golly-gosh, what could I possibly possess that I could share with you?  Something you might enjoy?

Honey, anyone?

All you have to do is leave a comment and brighten my day with your wit or wisdom.  That's it!

Pst!  Family members need not apply...you'll get yours!

The drawing will close this Thursday at 9 p.m. and I will post the winners - yes - winners (plural) on Friday.

Three lucky people will receive one, 12 oz Honey Bear each!

How's that for sharing?  Coming from a big family, sharing is a lesson Grama would have taught very early on!

  1. I love it when people post "old time" pictures of their family, thank YOU for sharing that! (Which reminds me, I've been meaning to scan a few of my old family photos...namely the one with my great aunt holding her pet...a groundhog!)

Anywho, how to brighten your day (via wit or wisdom, neither which I have a overabundance of mind you)in order to get a chance to win some honey...hmmmmmmmm. How about a joke?

    Why don't chickens wear underwear?
Beacause their pecker is on their face!!! (i just love that one, sad, isn't it?)
    :)

  3. Love that old picture!

Here is my "funny" for you, which just happened yesterday:

Simon (Ooky),who is seven, wrote a song while playing the piano. It went like this. (Imagine a lot of emotion with a sorrowful tune): "Why won't you fight with me...I mean...come on....you're not a pacifist." It is so nice they are listening in school, ya know?

  4. You are as sweet as your honey for offering this give-a-way! I feel a little funny entering 'cause we might/maybe get some of our own honey this year (fingers crossed) but I would just love to have some golden nectar from you. The Honey Bear would have a special place in my kitchen and I'd just look at it for a while!

My maternal grandma married at 16 also and raised a family of seven. (She said she had so many miscarriages in between the seven she lost count. Can you imagine?) She was a sweetie but believed in never "going out without your spurs on, 'cause you never know when you might need 'em." By that she meant always fix your hair, put on a clean dress and a little make-up. She always wore heels (pumps she called them) because she had really nice legs!

  5. How sweet of you to share! My grandmother always said "it takes all kinds to make this world and it takes people like that (the unpleasant people) to make you realize how sweet the others truly are."

  6. Wit and wisdom? You'll have to look to others for that! But I can offer up this tidbit--Don't bend over in the garden, dear---you know those taters got EYES.
    No?
    Well, I tried.
    Have a great day.
And what a SWEET tale from a SWEET gal-with or without honey

  7. Well I would be so excited to get my hands on some of your honey so count me in! For lack of any sayings on my brain right now, I'll leave you with something that came out of the mouth of Finnegan last week...

Me: "Hey you boys don't mind if your aunt and uncle bunk up in your room with you while they're here, right?"

Finnegan: " I guess... they've had their tonsils removed, right? Because I like quiet..."

I have a little book I write the random weird stuff they say in, LOL... sorry it's not more valuable to daily life :)

  10. I'm new here and I am really enjoying your blog! True story:
Struck up conversation with a 5ish year old at a chicken auction. Her daddy had just bought her a box a day old chicks and she was holding one. I asked her what she was gonna name it and she said "pecker." Then her momma said, "Oh, you can't name it that." Little girl asks why not. At this point I am embarrassed for all of us-wishing I hadn't asked when momma said, "you already have one with that name at home!" Oh, my!

  16. This is so fun. I doubt my funny moment will be much in comparison, but it's a treasured memory. My son was in about the 4th grade. We homeschooled and I was trying to explain the concepts of credit cards ad debt to him. After my simple but lengthy explanation, I asked him if he understood. In all seriousness he said, "Yay, and that's why you have to know how to add and subtract."

Grady - Nannie, the reserve tank! I show you! Just push the button! I can't reach!

    Mom - Uh, I don't think so

Grady - Nannie, just trust me, you can go about 10 miles on the reserve tank!

Mom - (after pushing the button) HOly crap that worked!!! Now, I think we shoudl just go home and wait for daddy to come back and fill the tank...

Grady - No Nannie, trust me. We can see the sheep.

  23. Great giveaway and post! Witty or not here I come.

When I was 5 years old we went on a family vacation and my maternal grandma came along. Our van broke down in the middle of no where in WY and my mom, sisters, grandma and I played games in our travel trailer while my dad walked to town for a tow. I kept asking my grandma how old she was and all she would say was, "6 plus 5". All I could think was, "Really? You're the same age as my oldest sister?" (Who was 11 at the time.)

  24. Well, dang, I didn't know we were supposed to post a F-U-N-N-Y! My favorite has to be from my granddaughter, Alicia, when she was 3-years old and talking about her Hoppa (Grandpa).

Alicia was in the bedroom watching TV, when she yelled at Amy (in the kitchen)..."MOM...Hoppa has little balls just like the guy on TV!!" Amy, in a panic, ran into the bedroom...where Alicia was watching golf!
