I've Got Tomat-Ho's

It's a tragedy really...

A huge storm ripped thru our area Friday night with winds around 60-70 mph.  You know that sinking feeling you get when you know it's gonna be bad?  Well, you can't see my garden from the house at all, but I just knew it wasn't gonna be pretty.  So as soon as the rain and winds stopped, Pig Pen and I went to check on things.
Main Garden

Melon Patch

Not good!  Of the 28 tomato plants, 11 of them were laying down!  And the others are Loose!  Those Damn Tomat-Ho's!  How dare they lay down on me!  So that's what I'm callin' em.  Tomat-Ho's.

If you have any survival stories from your Tomat-Ho's, I'd love to hear about how you cured the Ho's and set them 'straight' again.

  1. I'm just thinkin that you'll just end up with an over abundance of "baby" tomatoes when all is said and done!!!

  2. And I'm thinking you might have the biggest crop of tomatoes ever. Sometimes a good beating down is all they need to go into overdrive to produce and ripen fruit. I gave a young plant to a friend once, and she complained that it wasn't bearing. I told her to give it a good shake every time she went out the door. Well, she beat the crap out of it with a broom. She ended up with more tomatoes than I did!

I lifted just one of my downed ones, and tied it to the fence. I've decided to leave the others down. The tomat-hos will be hard to find under their covers, but so be it.

  3. I got a sick feeling in my stomach just reading your post and seeing the pictures. Been there, done that. Sending good vibrations that everything recovers.

Annie's Granny, I spit lemonade all over my screen reading your comment. :o) I'm going now to find my biggest broom then heading straight for my tomatoes to "talk."

  4. Ok HILARIOUS! Frustrated gardeners every where will be beating the crap out of their crops with a broom so they can have more "babies"!

  7. Gosh apple pie gal, am so sorry bout your garden, but dont give up and the one thing i have learned along the garden path in life is that if mater plants have had a good deal of rain there is a good chance the stem is really brittle and will break more if you try to correct it. If they were my lil maters, i would leave then lay and jus mulch under them gently as to not break em and let em have babies on the ground. Email me if you wish and i will tell you how I learned this lil tidbit.

  8. Stella, I must be just having a rough weekend...I tried to email you but it is not cooperating!! My husband had already nabbed us a bunch of straw. The plants themselves have already been propped back up, but the limbs are all over and on the ground too. So I should just lightly lay the straw down under and around them then, right? I will figure out the email thing and try to chat w/ you directly! Thanks for the advice!!!

  9. I agree with Annie's Granny, tomato plants need some stress to produce fruit. If all conditions are perfect the plant just puts it's energy into growing a plant- no need for off spring. If the plant senses that it may not make it, it produces fruit to keep the species alive.
